Bruce's Timber Door Frame

A customer who loves the Bote Cote Epoxy Resin System sent me a series of photo’s of the Restoration of his timber door frame (finished result above) which has suffered from rot damage behind the weatherboard cover strip as shown in Photo’s 2, 3 & 4. This is not surprising and to be expected if the paint scheme is old and breaking down in the photo’s. It is in surprisingly good condition for its age.

Why didn’t Bruce go to the local hardware store and purchase builders bog?

Because Bruce knows that Builders bog is a very poor adhesive and shrinks slightly as it cures + it does not waterproof the area. It is hopeless where moisture can get to the timber as most paints are nowhere near waterproof. If you are a builder / Handyman / home renovator, you would have seen it pull away where moisture is present after rain or watering. You probably blamed yourself for doing something wrong. Builders Bog is not suited for this application. Throw it in the bin.

This project shows you how to do it properly.

· Dig out the bulk of the rot.
· Mix Bote Cote with TPRDA and apply to the Rot affected area. Apply a 2nd coat if it soaks into the timber and no glossy surface.
· When it goes sticky (about an hour) and then mix a fresh mix of Bote Cote Resin in a 250ml measure cup (20ml Resin & 10ml Hardener) then add Sanding Filler and mix in until it is like thick peanut butter. Then lather on with a scraper. Do not try and fill in one go.
· Let it go very sticky and then overfill slightly with a fresh batch to allow for sanding level.
· A trick to do if the Epoxy wants to slump is to place plastic or Peelply over the top and push it back into place as Epoxy will not stick to plastic or Peelply. In this case Bruce used Gladwrap.
· Once cured pull the plastic off. Then sand excess off with 80 Grit sandpaper and smooth off with 120 grit sandpaper.

Due to this progress as documented in the photos, the photos show the finished door and doorframe that has stopped the rot and given the door many more years of life.
To get you going, BoatCraftNSW has a kit of product, WOT ROT Rot Repair Kit with detailed instructions and everything you need to do this job. Plus, we provide very good product support by phone or email to help you get going and come up with a great finish like Bruce.

One thing Bruce should have done, was to use our Lemon Peel Paint Remover which will take multiple layers of paint off in one application. This is important when restoring old paintwork as it will probably contain lead which was used in paint and was an excellent preservative, but deadly to play with.
