A few years ago, the RAN Sailing Association flagpole was dressed with penants for the RANSA regatta. When wind picked up it was noticed that the pole was "flopping around like an untrained seal." As a result, the volunteer maintenance team acted, and lowered the 100 year old flagpole for some TLC (tender loving care).

They thought the "drunken sailor flagpole problem" was due to cracks. What they did not expect was significant rot behind the cross tree band. The repair process is shown below in the sequence of photos
